 Historically, corporate network security was implemented using a “mote and castle” approach that hardened the networkperimeter but left the inside of the network unprotected. The validity of this approach has been weakened due to the introduction of web services, offshore development, remote workers and other initiatives that disintermediate the network perimeter, exposing these unprotected resources.
While this security philosophy has changed, the applications and protocols heavily leveraged within the corporate network have not. Their lack of security makes them vulnerable to insiders and partners who have often open access to what is typically a large, flat enterprise network. Protocols like Telnet and FTP are clear text protocols and provide an unobstructed view to both data and authentication information – analogous to showing complete strangers personal information like credit cards, social security numbers and medical records.
